Thunderbolt Area Federal Credit Union was chartered as Airwork Employees Federal Credit Union, on May 1, 1951, with $40.00 representing one $5.00 share each from the founding Directors, Harland A. Hogan, George A. Mellor, Asher W. Millard Sr., Neil MacEachern, Henry L. Hutchinson, James H Doughty, Albert A Sergiacomi, and Herbert Sayre. Assets as of December 1, 1951 were $19,259.00.

The business known as Airwork was sold many times during the next 50 years and we maintained the name of Airwork Federal Credit Union until early on the 21st century when the Current owner Dallas Airmotive decided to close the engine overhaul shop in Millville and move it to Texas. Recognizing that the name no longer fit the groups we served and with the growth of the Thunderbolt Motor Raceway, the current Board of Directors made the difficult decision to change our name to Thunderbolt Area Federal Credit Union.

We have faithfully served our members for nearly 60 years while surviving the many changes that occurred in Millville due to several of the Employee Groups closing. Maul Brothers and Kerr Glass which became part of Airwork Federal Credit Union through merger and the closing of our major supporter Dallas Airmotive along with a number of smaller SEG’S.

Airwork Corporation and each of its successor companies have always supported your credit union in ways too numerous to list and continue to due so today. In the near future we will occupy another building through the generosity of Dallas, and for the first time be a self supporting member of the Millville Municipal Airport Community, through a lease agreement with the Delaware River Bay Authority.

Our assets now approach $12,000,000.00 and this is amazing growth considering the loss of 6 major employee groups over the years. Your Board of Directors has been diligent in preparing for these downturns and we look to the future in our new home with enthusiasm and excitement.
